Job Description

Research Analyst – US Sports Media Location: Boston, MA. About the Role The US Sports Media analyst will spend approximately 50% of the time updating financial models for regional sports networks, emerging local broadcast stations, direct-to-consumer streaming deals, and sports-centric cable networks such as ESPN. The analyst will also create new models for emerging rights deals and maintain database tracking of media rights and carriage across all major and regional networks. Key responsibilities include: Leveraging Media Census subscriber data to estimate inner and outer market subscribers at a Nielsen DMA level. Estimating inner and outer market license fees to calculate total affiliate revenue. Calculating advertising revenue using CPM, inventory, and ratings estimates. Allocating sports rights expenses using an amortization schedule across contract terms. Reconciling estimates against reported 10-K data where applicable. Producing five‑year projections based on macroeconomic and industry trends. Reaching out to industry contacts for model inputs and insights. When updated, the analyst will roll up individual network estimates to generate industry-wide metrics, provide written analysis for the annual Global Sports Report, and present findings to clients, press, sales, and support teams, as well as on webinars with prospective clients. The analyst will maintain a database tracking media rights deals for all 83 U.S. professional MLB, NBA, and NHL teams, as well as national sports rights across broadcast and cable networks. The database will also track RSN carriage across traditional and virtual MVPDs. Additional tasks involve writing research articles on industry developments, monitoring quarterly earnings releases of major RSN owners, staying current on trends such as legalized sports gambling and streaming services, and attending industry conferences to network and produce panel discussion content. Background in distribution strategy, media rights, and advertising sales. Proficient analytical skills, including high‑level Excel, financial modeling, and scripting in Python, SQL, Tableau, or Power BI. Professional writing skills with a publishing background. Ability to interact with clients, prospects, and engage in external speaking. Team orientation with strong communication and collaboration skills. Compensation and Benefits Base salary range: $61,846 – $126,225, based on location, experience, and skill set.
